From Fear to Freedom:
The Pluto in Sagittarius Experience
By Linda Brady
Pluto entered the sign of Sagittarius on January 18, 1995 staying until April
21, 1995 when it retrograded back into Scorpio. It entered Sagittarius again on
November 11, 1995 where it will remain until January 26, 2008. Pluto has had a
250-year orbit around the Sun, remaining in a sign for approximately 30 years.
Within the last few years Pluto's orbit has altered and its average time in each
sign has decreased to about 13 years. The last time it was in Sagittarius was
from 1749 until 1761.
The guardian of our unconscious mind, Pluto urges us to focus on personal
transformation. By helping us face our deepest fears and obsessions, we can
alter them. Pluto also symbolizes our shadow side, which we need to embrace to
feel whole and centered. By attracting those soul contracts that mirror our
fears, paranoia and rage, Pluto pulls our shadows up from the depths of our
unconscious for us to recognize and acknowledge them in the light. Providing
powerful energy, Pluto provides us the courage to change and to pursue our
greatest desires. Pluto also motivates us to release old resentments, enabling
our rebirth into spiritual and emotional strength, courage and deep confidence.
Sagittarius symbolizes the journey to truth and freedom: a quest for enlightened
philosophy and education, the urge to travel and discover, the need to expand,
the will to experience life, and the desire to optimize the filter of intuition.
Therefore Pluto in Sagittarius seeks to provide the energy for profound life
altering situations. Pluto in Sagittarius facilitates transformation by creating
new paradigms in our beliefs that will lead to a life of optimism and faith.
Serendipity is a Sagittarius philosophy. On January 28, 1754 Sr. Horace Walpole
coined the word when Pluto was in Sagittarius! Understanding the philosophy of
Serendipity will transform our attitudes into an optimistic and meaningful view
of our life experiences. Having the faith to look at the spectrum of choices,
which our soul allows us to diversify our expectations, to realize that the
possibility of the unexpected — with some adjustments — can be better than
anything imagined, is Pluto in Sagittarius. The German philosopher who wrote a
profound couplet about Serendipity was born in 1749 with Pluto in Sagittarius in
his natal chart. He describes it as "the moment one definitely commits oneself,
then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would
never otherwise have occurred."
Pluto in Sagittarius is the time to create freedom in our thinking by
defining our personal truth. David Spangler in his book “Revelations: The Birth
of a New Age” outlines seven laws detailing how we can enhance our spiritual
energy and use it more creatively. One of these laws is the Law of Love and
Truth. When we are deceiving ourselves we are perpetuating illusions, we are
limiting our reality, which saps our ability to be happy. In my book,
“Discovering Your Soul Mission” I describe an illusion as an unconscious longing
that is a set up for failure and disappointment. When we say: “If only I could
have this or that” we are creating illusions that torment us. We would all feel
better about who we are and what we do if we identify these illusions, confront
what they represent and resolve them. Understanding the truth about ourselves
and having the courage to delve into the vast recesses of our unconscious to
confront our karmic demons will lead to personal awareness and freedom.
The last time that Pluto was in Sagittarius (1749 until 1761) brought about
"The Great Awakening" in the American Colonies. This historic religious movement
was a significant departure from the strict Puritanism that prevailed in that
time. Puritanism was strict, cold and rational. The new religion was passionate,
heart felt and enthusiastic. The new ministers encouraged spirituality that came
from actual heart centered experience. People, when moved by their faith,
expressed it by being emotional and physical. This new philosophy believed that
all people should experience their faith aligning itself with the strong
democratic movement that was sweeping the country at that time. In the spirit of
Sagittarius, ministers were encouraged to travel to their flock. A pantheistic
approach to spirituality, that is God being recognized as a part of all
creation, was creeping into religious thought. This Awakening concretized the
Sagittarius beliefs of truth, democracy, intuition, natural law and most
importantly, FREEDOM! Pluto in Sagittarius stimulated this religious
transformation at that time and will continue to help us to seek meaning in our
experiences today. Sagittarius is one of the Fire signs that rule our ability to
access and process intuition in our lives. Intuition is the voice of God that
brings unexpected knowledge that can spur us to profound change. It is the
filter that helps us understand the significance of the symbols that bring depth
to our life’s experiences. Pluto in Sagittarius will help us create more ethical
standards in the area of philosophy, law and religion.
Honoring natural law was and is a profound expression of Pluto in
Sagittarius. It is time to continue honoring the symbols of the earth and the
creatures that dwell on it. We have come a long way in taking care of our
animals since the first veterinary hospital was founded in Lyons, France in 1761
when Pluto was in Sagittarius! Now, as Pluto has returned to Sagittarius, we
need to understand that animals have souls and are here to teach and serve us. I
have often said that the reason animals do not live as long as we do is for us
to understand reincarnation. I have had the same animal’s soul return to me
three times in my life. Throughout my relationship with my precious soul dog, I
have learned about unconditional love and heart centered generosity. I have been
able to experience joy in the present, by just watching him experience his life.
I honor him for all that he is and all that he has shown me. He is clearly one
of my most significant soul mates!
Pluto holds the secrets of our past lives. In transit it provides experiences
about the karmic guilt that needs to be consciously processed and resolved to
create karmic balance and true freedom. Many of these experiences were in
countries where the Inquisition flourished for many centuries. It began in the
14th Century in Spain and Portugal (when Pluto was in Sagittarius) and was
finally curtailed in 1751 (when Pluto returned to Sagittarius several hundred
years later). Those of us who have karmic memories of these terrible times will
have them revealed so that they may be transformed and healed in this time of
Pluto in Sagittarius. I have worked with many clients who have gained
information from their emotional reactions to current events like the terrorist
attacks of September 11, 2001 and the sniper attacks in the Washington area in
October of 2002. Others have had dreams of Spain during the Inquisition and woke
up knowing that they had lived there. Many have had to resolve deep anger and
resentments against the Catholic Church. They had projected their own karmic
guilt against the Church, instead of acknowledging their own karmic culpability.
Finding their truth has given many of my clients the ability to free themselves
by asking for forgiveness. During the Pluto in Sagittarius transit, on March 12,
2000, Pope John Paul II asked for forgiveness in the name of the Church for its
“infidelities to the Gospel committed by some of our brethren.” He was
apologizing for the Church’s part in the Inquisition, the Crusades and the
Holocaust. During this time I earnestly hope that there are more apologies
coming from other religions for their past wrongdoing. Thanks to Pluto's transit
in Sagittarius, we now have the opportunity to change our reactions, make new
commitments and take actions that will heal our past to improve our future.
It is time to promote the cultural understanding between countries that will
tear down prejudice, fear and ultimately war. Now is the time for a new
spiritual renaissance born by purging the conflicts of the past. In this time of
terrorism and fear it would seem unlikely that these ideals will be manifested.
Yet if we understand the highest ideals of Pluto in Sagittarius it means the
death of religious extremism, dogmatism and the terrorism that springs from it.
For hundreds of years people have hated each other simply because their path to
God was different. During the Inquisition from 600,000 to nine million died
(depending on your source) because the Catholic Church believed that their
axioms of faith were the only ones that led to salvation. Jews and pagans died
because of similar dogmatic views. Now, during the next few years of Pluto in
Sagittarius, we have another opportunity to transform the type of extremism that
relies on dogmatic and violent religious doctrines.
