Saturn In Gemini
By Linda Brady

Students are carrying banners opposing the war, they scream “No More War” they are wearing jeans and tie dye shirts. The year is 1973 and the war is in Viet Nam and the generation was mine. My generation has Pluto in Leo (if you were born between August 4, 1938 and October 19, 1956 you share this placement). During the Viet Nam war years, we learned about dissent and the power of like minded groups coming together. We learned that we were different than our parents; we had ideals and the youthful hope that our ideals could change the world.
Thirty years ago the planet Saturn was in the last degrees of Gemini and my generation learned how to speak. We came together to share one voice: the voice of a new generation. I live a few blocks from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and today the scene is the same. The only thing that has changed is the location of the war. Another generation is making its views known and maybe their ideals will change the world.

Saturn in Gemini is requiring us to learn how to communicate more effectively and in a responsible manner whether it is about world events or with ourselves. I know how amazingly complex we are and I know how important it is for all of us to learn how to communicate with each of our different parts. When Saturn went into Gemini it catalyzed the mutable cross which is composed of three other energies, Sagittarius, its opposite, and Virgo and Pisces:  its squares.  To be fully expressive we need to understand and keep the dialog between these energies conscious.

Pull out your astrological charts find your mutable cross and the planets that live in those signs and then have a mutable cross dialog using my examples.  We have until June 3rd to review and integrate this powerful transit.  This may be the last time many of us experience a Saturn in Gemini experience.

Sagittarius Speaks:

Hello Saturn!  Welcome to our mutable cross.  You will be traveling through the sign of Gemini until June 3, 2003.  You have been opposing me for the last 2½ years.  Since you will not be around for thirty years, we need to prepare for the final challenges and opportunities that your opposition will create for me.

I am an optimistic visionary for the future.  Some people call me a Polly Anna, dreaming the impossible dream.  I love abstract ideas and consider myself a philosopher and a generalist.  I need freedom, space and the country or I can get claustrophobic.  I have to travel to feel happy.  I know my truth and do not keep it to myself.  I can be blunt and I tend to be a bit preachy.  I am restless and easily bored.  I may be commitment phobic because I value my independence so much.  I must say that the last two years have been challenging because of you.  I have seen you as diametrically opposed to all that I believe in.  I have not trusted your getting lost in the moment.  You have no vision.  I cannot trust anyone who does not have a strong belief system and I think that you lie.

Gemini Answers:

Thank you for your kind welcome Sagittarius.  First, there is no reason for you to fear me.  I am your complement and reflection.  The challenges that my opposition provides will aid us in becoming more integrated and whole.  We are inter-dependent Sag and can learn a lot from each other.  That being said:  in my Saturnian manner I will discuss each of your points in a structured and organized fashion.

1.      I have opposed your need to live in the future.  I am about living in the present and understanding the fullness of the moment.  You needed to learn that from me.  Hopefully you learned that true joy occurs in an instant.  I know that I created emotional discomfort when you forgot that.

2.      I agree that you are an optimist and may even be an impossible dreamer.  I have a bias towards being a cynic.  I believe that we have helped each other.  I must say though that I am a better observer than you because I use my intellect.  I have helped you become more realistic and practical in how you deal with life circumstances.  I have helped you create dreams that you can manifest.

3.      You certainly love philosophy and you see the wonders of the forest.  Yet you sometimes do not have the supportive information that will give your philosophy power.  On the other side, I love facts and look to all of the trees for answers.  I can get lost there and need you to help me see the larger picture.  I am always curious and know how to research what we need to SUPPORT your philosophic bent.  Together we can be brilliant!  Good induction and deduction, what a combination!

4.      Have you ever thought that your need for space and the country keeps you from being involved in everyday life?  Do you think maybe it is your fear of commitment that fuels that fire?  I need versatility and movement.  I am curious about people and need them in my life.  I want the city life.  I forget to walk in the forest and be contemplative.  We need to find a way to compromise this.  I will learn how to relax and take long drives with you in the country, if you come with me to the museum and have lunch in a busy outdoor café.

5.      A bit preachy?  You are always telling people what your truth is.  Has it occurred to you that they may not be interested?  I am a master communicator.  I listen and observe and want to create equal sharing.  I read body language.  If someone is tired of hearing me I can be quiet.  I do congratulate you on your intrinsic sense of honesty. I can be disingenuous and deceptive when it suits me.  I can learn to value the truth through your example.

6.      We both are restless and easily bored and need to learn about relaxation techniques.  I will research methods for this and then you can incorporate them into your belief system.  With your vision and my investigation we can make this happen.

7.      I would agree that you have commitment problems.  I can make commitments to many people and be seen as disloyal.  This is a place where we really need some help.  Perhaps we can both look to our friends, Pisces and Virgo to assist us.

Virgo Speaks:

You have been squaring me for the last 2½ years.  We have experienced the tension, challenges and opportunities that your square has created for us.  I am practical in how I use my mind.  I analyze everything down to its smallest detail.  I believe that will help me understand how life works.  I use my powers of discrimination to organize and structure my life.  I want order and perfection in my life and can be critical and judgmental of myself and others if that is not achieved.  I have incredibly high standards, yet cannot seem to find serenity within myself.  I worry and fret over how things will turn out and try to control the outcomes.  I value efficiency and accomplishment.  I want to live a healthy life and help others do the same.  I wish to serve and sometimes I cross the line into “fixing” others with or without their permission.  I can be extreme and believe in black and white solutions.  I have judgments against you Gemini.  I think you are disloyal and scattered.  I have watched you make stupid mistakes in your quest to be versatile and curious.  You have caused me great anxiety in the last two years.

Gemini Answers:

Virgo, I am always curious about your motivations in making your critical judgments of me.  They seem harsh.  I hope that we can find a way to resolve our differences.  The challenges that our “squaring off” has provided could aid us in becoming more interactive.  We are both ruled by the planet Mercury.  We can use the dynamic between us to provide opportunities for more intellectual growth.  That being said I will

discuss each of your points in a structured and organized fashion.  I know that you prefer that anyway!

1.      I absolutely agree that you analyze everything.    I do not analyze facts I collect them.  I rely on you to process those facts, and you rely on me to gather them.  I think that you do not give me credit for that.  You want to know how a butterfly flies, I love watching it fly.  There is a difference.  Both are important.

2.      You discriminate well.  I do not.  I want to understand everything and do not wish to create order out of my observations.  I need you to help me decide what to focus on.  I honor that.  I would like you to appreciate my mental sharpness, agility and observation.

3.      I do not think about perfection as an expectation.  You do!  I  believe that true perfection exists in a moment.  I want to be present to those moments.  You are too busy analyzing them or trying to create some order that you miss the obvious.  Too bad.  No wonder you worry so much.  Lighten up!  Let me help you be more curious and less obsessed with external order.

4.      Your constant judgment of yourself and others can create difficulties in your relationships.  People do not like to be criticized.  They get defensive and angry and stop talking.   I want to find ways to continue conversations, not stop them.

5.      I can understand wanting to live a healthy life.  I love to walk and move around a lot.  I also like to eat different foods occasionally.  So can we have some fun food once in awhile?  I promise that we will walk it off.

6.      I am not as interested in service or “fixing” anyone.  I find people unique and their differences intriguing.  I know that you care about them and want them to be better.  I would prefer having great conversations and sharing what I know.  If they want more information, I would be thrilled to share it with them.

7.      Being restricted to black and white solutions seems so boring to me.  I love the variety of possibilities, the many shades of black, white and gray.  I do not see how you could limit yourself that way.  Let me help you find new and exciting potentials.  I guarantee that it would help you relax.

Pisces Speaks:

Begging your pardon, but you’ve also squared me.  Because of you, I have felt very inadequate and scared.  I have admired your intellect and mental clarity, but FEEL you do not understand the depth of my emotions and spirit.   I feel irrelevant in your intellectual quest.  I feel better now that I have shared that with you.  Perhaps if you really could acknowledge me on an emotional level, feel me, we could have a better relationship.  So this is who I am.  I am sensitive and compassionate sometimes to the point of sacrificing myself.  I sometimes feel that other people’s needs are more important than my own.  I live in my feelings and relate to the world through them.  I am creative and love to sing, dance or paint.  I can escape the cruelties of the world by doing drugs or alcohol.  I meditate and embrace my spiritual side daily.  I have faith.  I love to be emotionally connected to all living things and can lose myself in others.  I dissolve into life with no boundaries.  I am fluid and cannot be contained.

Gemini Answers:

Dear sensitive Pisces.  I understand your feelings; I just cannot feel your feelings.  That does not mean that I ignore you, rather you fascinate me.  We are definitely different.  I hope that this square has helped us resolve our misunderstandings.  I was very conscious of speaking kindly and gently to you.  It is important for me to speak so that all people will be able to listen, including the emotional ones.

1.      I certainly agree that you are sensitive and compassionate.  That is quite appealing.  I can learn that from you.  It would help me communicate better.  I do not understand how you fail to take care of yourself.  You need to be able to observe what is going on and pull yourself out of all those feelings.  I can help if you will let me.  I can help you use some of my intellect to detach yourself and establish more boundaries.

2.      It is hard for me to understand why you feel so inadequate and selfless.  Your needs are as important as anyone else’s.  I never think about that anyway.  To me all people are equally interesting and worthy of exploring.  I would suggest that you let me help you learn how to communicate with your soul.  You would never feel inadequate again.

3.      You certainly do live in your feelings.  I, on the other hand, live in my thoughts and ideas.  This is where we can cause each other discomfort and conflict.  I think that this square has given us an opportunity for these two functions to co-exist and even co-mingle.  You know Carl Jung said that rationality is the integration of emotions and intellect.

4.      I love your creativity.  I love its beauty and ethereal qualities.  I am creative also.  I am a writer and speaker.  I love words and ideas, then sharing them.  Can we be even more creative and blend these filters?  I think so.  I can provide you with wonderful ideas that you can fashion into the arts.

5.      I watch you escape from life.  You live too often in your past experiences of the other side and then compare it to the earth.  That is not a fair comparison.  Your soul put you here.  Have faith in that!  Wow!  A Gemini telling a Pisces to have faith in the precious moments of life.

6.      Dissolution is very different than observation.  You merge.  I detach.  Sounds like another conflict.  Could you feel less out of control if you were able to maintain a connection to your conscious mind?  I know that I would enjoy being that adaptable.  Maybe it is not a conflict if we help each other.
